About me and how I work

Hi, I’m Nicky, a dietitian-nutritionist who loves having the opportunity to help people with health challenges.  Over the years I’ve seen lots of health and nutrition fads and ideas come and go.  My philosophy is to work with you to tailor my science-based advice to your lifestyle, health condition(s), food preferences, allergies/intolerances, family needs, cooking skills, budget... the list goes on!  There is no one-size fits all, no single ‘right’ way to eat – and no magic bullet.

I’m delighted to be re-opening my private consulting clinics after taking a break from these for a while.  I took time out to manage my own health challenges after I was diagnosed with Lupus nephritis (an auto-immune condition which damaged my kidneys).  I’m happy to say that with the help of a great healthcare team, some lifestyle changes (less stress!) and the right medication I’m back on track.

Being the patient for a change has been a very interesting journey for me and helped me appreciate the important things in life!  I’m passionate about the benefits of nutrition for improving so many aspects of health.  I would love to assist you.

I’m a bit of a study nerd!

I confess that I have a habit of continually studying. I completed my Science degree and Post-Grad Diploma to qualify as a dietitian back in the early 2000s. Since then I have completed formal courses in Advanced Sports Nutrition (Uni of Otago), Advanced Paediatric Nutrition (Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne) and the Low FODMAP diet ( Monash University, Melbourne). I also completed a Post-Grad Certificate in Public Health (Uni of Otago).

I’m thrilled to have recently completed a Master of Health Sciences degree (Uni of Otago). My research investigated dietetic care in inflammatory bowel disease in NZ. I was privileged to present this research at conferences in NZ and Europe (sadly, by virtual link due to COVID!)  I sincerely hope my research helps to improve healthcare for the many NZers with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Every year I spend dozens of hours (and many dollars too!) attending conferences and workshops, completing webinars, listening to podcasts, reading journals so I can keep up with the play in the latest nutrition research. I guess I love learning!
